Tidak perlu lagi digambarkan betapa pilunya penderitaan para korban gelombang tsunami di Asia selatan. Gambaran tragis pemicu iba detik demi detik mengudara di gelombang televisi dan radio. Yak, kita hanya bisa iba dan tergugah untuk memberi bantuan, tidak lebih. Simpati dari berbagai penjuru dunia mengalir deras, namun hanya segelintir yang sanggup ber-empati.

It is hardly plausible to endeavor in describing the sorrow of the victims of the Asian tsunami catastrophe. Tragic depictions are being broadcasted over and over again throughout the globe. They moved the rest of humanity to give aid with deep sympathy and only a limited few that can empathize.

Umat manusia telah menjadi saksi terhadap penyalahgunaan ajaran agama dari sekedar sikap acuh tak acuh sampai ke skala sedahsyat perang salib. Perkembangan teknologi, yang tadinya diharapkan semakin mendewasakan pemikiran sempit agamis ternyata membawa pedang bermata dua. Selain penyebaran iman dan pendidikan agama semakin mudah disebarluaskan, demikian pula propaganda hitam yang berusaha menyulut perpecahan dan konflik antar pemeluk agama.
